Biographical Note

Rio Vista, Texas, natives Carl Douglas Garner (1917-1972) and Alma Catherine Cooper
(1922-1999) married in 1945, and the couple had five children: Mariann Wizard
(1946-), Pamela Taylor, Douglas Garner, Patrick Garner, and Robert Garner. During
World War II, Carl served in the Pacific Theatre for the U.S. Navy, while Catherine
worked as an inspector for the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation after
earning a certificate in Engineering, Science, and Management from the War Training
Program of the University of Texas. Following the war, Carl worked as a factory
superintendent for the Grubbs and Rutledge Potato Chip companies in Forth Worth.
Upon the death of her husband, Catherine returned to Rio Vista, becoming the first
female mail carrier for the Cleburne Post Office. During the 1980s and 1990s, she
volunteered at the Walls Regional Hospital and was a lay leader for the Rio Vista
Methodist Church.

Scope and Contents

The Carl Douglas and Alma Catherine Cooper Garner Papers, [ca. 1920s]-2001, document
the personal relationships and careers of the Garner family. The collection is
divided based on creator into four series: I. Garner family papers, II. Alma
Catherine Cooper Garner papers, III. Carl Douglas Garner papers, and IV. Mariann
Garner Wizard papers. The Garner family papers consist of correspondence, military
and legal records, printed material, and photographs, which illustrate the marriage
of Carl and Catherine Garner as well as their relationships with their children,
other family members, and friends from World War II until their deaths. The second
series, Alma Catherine Cooper Garner papers consist of correspondence, school
records, printed material, certificates, notes, and printed material, concerning her
friendships, career as a post office carrier, volunteerism, and association with the
Rio Vista Methodist Church. The Carl Douglas Garner papers pertain to Carl’s social
and business associations, such as the Lions Club and Civilian Conservation Corps,
and include his school records, business card, certificates, and membership cards.
Consisting of babybooks, medical records, certificates, and printed material, the
Mariann Garner Wizard papers document her youth and education from her birth in 1946
until 1964.
