			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Lee Cohen Harby (1849-1918) was the fifth child of Marx E. and Armida Harby Cohen. In 1869, she married her cousin, John de la Motta Harby. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Galveston, Texas, and then to Houston in 1879. During this time, Harby published several essays on historical and social topics, including <emph render="doublequote">Christmas Before the War</emph> in a Galveston newspaper (1873), <emph render="doublequote">On Women and their Possibilities</emph> (1883), <emph render="doublequote">Texas Types and Contrasts</emph> in <emph render="italic">Harper’s New Monthly Magazine</emph> (1890), and <emph render="doublequote">The Earliest Texas</emph> in the <emph render="italic">American Historical Association Annual Report</emph> (1892). In addition, Harby published poetry and short stories in several magazines and newspapers, including <emph render="italic">Ladies’ Home Journal</emph> and <emph render="italic">Neale’s Monthly</emph>. An active member of several state historical associations, Harby was also a member of the American Historical Association, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.</p>

Harby’s notes and bibliography pertain to Native Americans at various missions, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission near Nacogdoches, and historical research on other missions and missionaries in late 17th and early 18th century Spanish Texas.</p>
