			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born in San Augustine County, Texas, Orlando Thacker Hanks (1844-1926) was the son of Horatio McMullen Hanks (b. 1803) and Nancy Katherine Thacker (b. 1824). On February 11, 1847, Hanks married Susan Purnell Thacker, with whom he had at least ten children. Near the outbreak of the Civil War, Hanks joined Captain Benjamin Franklin Benton’s Company K of the First Texas Infantry in Hood’s Brigade, which became a part of the Northern Army of Virginia. Hanks’ recollections of the Benton’s Company have been published in <emph render="italic">History of Captain B.F. Benton’s Company</emph>, <emph render="italic">Hood’s Texas Brigade</emph> and <emph render="italic">A Yellow Rose in Old Dominion</emph>.</p>

			<p>Written in September 1918 for W.G. Sharp, the O.T. Hanks Reminiscences, 1861-1865, 1918, chronicle Benjamin F. Benton’s Company in Hood’s Brigade during the Civil War. Hanks’ recollections concern the military activities of the Company, including camp life and battles. He describes marching from San Augustine County through Georgia and Virginia and engaging in battle at Williamsburg and Chickamauga. In addition, Hanks mentions the activities of General John B. Magruder and Captain Joseph V. Massey, among others associated with the regiment.</p>
