Biographical NoteBorn in Germany in 1870, Gus Hanewald emigrated to San Antonio, Texas, around 1920. Scope and ContentsThe Gus Hanewald Diary, 1930, documents Hanewald’s trip to Germany from May 22 through September 23, 1930. Entitled Eine Reise nach Deutschland, the diary describes traveling with a friend by train on the Southern Pacific Railroad from San Antonio to Houston and eventually to Galveston, where he embarked on the ship Rio Panuco bound for Germany.
