Scope and Contents

Consisting of correspondence, shipping receipts, and expense lists, the Georgia Letters, 1754-1888, document the shipping and mercantile business along the East Coast of the United States. The correspondence concerns the business activities of merchants in Augusta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; and Charleston, South Carolina, including a series of letters from David Wood to Joshua Greenleaf. Shipping receipts chronicle the movement of goods from New York to Charleston on the Schooner Hannah and Amelia, while the expense lists include a wide variety of costs from groceries to workers’ wages.
