A Guide to the J. C. George Papers, 1862-1904
Biographical NoteJohn Chowning George was born in Warren County, Kentucky, one of seven children of Alfred and Elizabeth (Chowning) George. George and his brother William H. George (b. 1829) both migrated to Ellis County, Texas, around 1860 and joined the Confederate Army in 1861. George served in the 10th Texas Infantry before being discharged in 1865 due to injury. After the war, George returned to Ellis County and worked as a blacksmith. He married Rachil Matilda Davis in 1866. The family later lived in Palo Pinto County and then Nolan County. George Papers document, 1862-1904, the service of brothers John Chowning and William H. George as Confederate soldiers and their involvement with veteran reunions. The correspondence includes a letter from John to William during the war (1862) and a letter from a fellow veteran to William about a reunion (1904). Additionally, the collection includes William’s brief handwritten autobiography, a printed broadside for the 1904 annual reunion of the Texas Division, and two undated photographs of Confederate veterans at reunions.
