Biographical Note

Marmaduke Gardner was a pioneer Universalist minister in Texas. Born in South Carolina in 1812, he became an ordained pastor of the Universalist Church in 1848 and moved to Texas in 1854. He became known for his extensive travel and missionary work and organized the first Universalist Society in Texas at Lawhon Springs, a community once situated near Lexington. Gardner died in 1879 in McDade, Texas.
