Biographical Note
The wife of Jesse E. Fox, Lorena Katherine Hillyer Fox (1901-1986) was born in Louise, Texas, to D. D. and Elisa Fischer Hillyer (1878-1967), the daughter of Katherine Schall-Fischer (1839-1908). Following her graduation from the University of Texas at Austin, Fox taught English and speech for high schools in Louise, Austin, and other Texas school districts. She served as historian or secretary for social organizations, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Austin Kwill Klub, Austin Area Garden Council, and Capitol Area Chrysanthemum Society, for which her husband served as president. An amateur historian and writer, Fox wrote numerous articles on Texas and early pioneers, including Rev. John Freeman Hillyer and his wife Mary Adeline Biscoe Hillyer.
Scope and Contents
The Lorena Hillyer Fox Papers, 1756-1972, document the history of the Hillyer and Robbins families and Fox’s research about the history of Baylor University, Independence, Texas, and Baptists and Lutherans in Texas. The collection contains genealogies, correspondence, photographs, and printed materials, such as newspaper clippings, booklets, programs, and biographies and autobiographies. Topics of the papers include Paul Adolf Theodor Bogisch, Frederick Albert Bracher, and other early Lutheran ministers in Texas; the Biscoe family; the Julius Augustus and Ann Catherine Hillyer Robbins family; Baylor University and College in Independence, Texas; the Hillyer family, including John Freeman Hillyer, Katherine Schall-Fischer, and Elisa Fischer Hillyer; and the history of Independence, Texas.
