Born in Clinton County, Illinois, to John Elias and Lavinia Ernst Row Chaffin, John Ellis Chaffin (1831-1870) moved to Texas sometime before 1850, where he was a farmer near Limestone County. Chaffin married Sarah Christ on January 5, 1854. The couple eventually had three children, all of whom were born in Texas in the 1850s.
