Scope and Contents

The Monroe F. Cockrell Collection, 1862, 1864, 1963-1964, contains three letters
concerning the Confederate Army’s battles, hospitals, and railroads during the Civil
War. The collection includes a photocopy and transcript of a January 6, 1862, letter
by Confederate Colonel A. P. Hill, discussing the impending battle of Bull Run. The
transcript contains notes dated 1963 by historian Lester N. Fitzhugh and Cockrell. A
typescript of a March 28, 1864, letter by S. H. Stout describes his work as
Confederate Medical Director of Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia, and contains an end
note by Cockrell in 1964. The final letter transcript, dated July 27, 1964, is an
analysis by Cockrell regarding the Manassas Junction and Centreville Confederate
Military Railroad, a part of the Orange, Alexandria, and Manassas Railroad.
