A Guide to the Horace Clark, Jr. Papers, 1884-1892, 1915-1944
Biographical NoteHorace Clark, Jr. (1861-1946) was born in Independence, Texas, to Horace Clark, Sr. (1819-1909) and Martha Davis (d. 1896). His father served as principal of the Baylor Female Department in Independence from 1851 to 1871 and intermittently as secretary of the Baptist State Convention of Texas from 1856 to 1875. Best known as a pianist, composer, and music teacher, Clark received training from L.P. Grunewald, a noted piano teacher in Houston, and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Clark also studied music at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. The collection contains correspondence (1941-1944), diaries (1884-1892; 1941-1944), a guest book, greeting cards, literary productions and poetry, speeches given at various musical events in Texas, account papers, recital programs for pupils (1915-1937), newspaper clippings of reviews of his and others performances (1919-1927), and a photograph (1941).
