Biographical Note
The Chism, Scott and Fambles families were three African-American families residing in Wood County near Hawkins, Texas. Farrella Chism (1892-1973) was the tenth child born to Fred Chism (b. ca. 1846) and his wife Nettie (b. ca. 1850). Farrella married Horace Patterson in 1916, though she divorced him in 1918. In 1937, she married Henry Scott (d. 1947), and they had one daughter, Linnie Bell Scott. Farrella also bore two sons, Edd Fambles (b. 1912) and Don Leonard Smith (b. 1934). Other family members lived in Hawkins, including her brother Fred and his son Ceasar (d. 1965).
Scope and Contents
The Chism-Scott-Fambles Family Papers, 1902-1986, contains business and personal correspondence (1921-1977), legal and financial records (1902-1970), photographs, and printed items documenting the Chism, Scott, and Fambles families. The majority of the correspondence and legal and financial records pertain to Farrella Chism Scott, but some documents relate to her father Fred Chism, her brother Fred, her nephew Ceasar Chism and her son Edd Fambles. In addition, the collection includes funeral service bulletins containing obituaries of family and friends (1957-1979), records of the Heroines of Jericho Masonic fraternal society (1935-1945), a Home Veterinary Guide with prescriptions (1913), two annotated Hawkins phonebooks (1956-1957), receipts (1902-1983), contracts (1952-1970), insurance policies (1926-1955), and an annotated New Testament (1948).
