Scope and Contents

The Cattle and Ranch Collection, 1847-1940, contains financial and legal records,
correspondence, newspaper clippings, a brand book, historical narratives, and
reminiscences, which concern ranching, the cattle trade, and cattle drives. The
majority of the collection consists of newspaper clippings collected by archives
staff about the cattle trade and ranching industry in Texas from the 1900s to 1940.
Original correspondence and transcriptions of letters, 1858-1875, discuss stray
cattle and life on Texas ranches. Collected by historian J. Evetts Haley, the
narratives and reminiscences, [ca. 1924-1935], pertain to the history of specific
ranches, memoirs of cattlemen and cowboys, and the cattle trade and cattle drives in
Texas and the west. Original financial and legal documents include an 1847 estray
bond; an 1875 power of attorney; an 1883 bill of trust; an 1877 Calloway County tax
receipt; a debt cancellation; and numerous bills of sale for cattle and supplies
purchased by N. C. Gullett and others, dated from 1857 to 1890. The undated brand
book contains clippings of different cattle brands in Colorado.
