Biographical Note

In the late-19th century, George C. Carttar immigrated to San Antonio, Texas, from England, where his relative Edward Arundel Carttar served as West Kent’s coroner in the 1880s.

Accountant Charles Graham Carttar (1835-ca. 1910s) served as liquidator for the Volunteer Service and General Assurance Association in England and as an agent for political candidates in the London and Kent areas. In 1875, he and his wife Mary immigrated to the United States, settling in San Antonio, Texas, where he served as secretary of the Texas British Association and studied the architecture and history of the city and state.


Scope and Contents

The George C. Carttar Family Papers, 1859-1916, concern the business career and social interests of George C. Carttar, Edward Arundel Carttar, and Charles Graham Carttar. The collection includes scrapbooks, maps and plats, a ledger, certificates, photographs, and pictorial material. The scrapbooks, 1859-1916, contain maps, plats, plans, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other documents pertaining to the careers of coroner Edward Arundel Carttar and accountant Charles Graham Carttar; housekeeping and insurance; San Antonio and Texas commerce, politics, architecture, and history; and pictorial views of the United States and Canada. The maps and plats, 1871-1895, illustrate Bexar County and the state of Texas; river and harbor improvements in the United States; and railroad maps of the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and North America. The photographs and pictorial works, 1882-1891, [ca. 1910], undated, depict buildings in San Antonio and Bexar County, outdoor scenes at Grove Lake in Castroville, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, and reproductions of images and text from newspapers. Additionally, the ledger, 1866-1869, documents Charles Graham Carttar’s tenure as liquidator for the Volunteer Service and General Assurance Association in England, and the certificates, 1862, 1893, 1911, concern Charles Graham Carttar and his work with the Texas British Association.
