Scope and Contents

The George C. Carttar Family Papers, 1859-1916, concern the business career and
social interests of George C. Carttar, Edward Arundel Carttar, and Charles Graham
Carttar. The collection includes scrapbooks, maps and plats, a ledger, certificates,
photographs, and pictorial material. The scrapbooks, 1859-1916, contain maps, plats,
plans, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other documents pertaining to the
careers of coroner Edward Arundel Carttar and accountant Charles Graham Carttar;
housekeeping and insurance; San Antonio and Texas commerce, politics, architecture,
and history; and pictorial views of the United States and Canada. The maps and
plats, 1871-1895, illustrate Bexar County and the state of Texas; river and harbor
improvements in the United States; and railroad maps of the United Kingdom,
continental Europe, and North America. The photographs and pictorial works,
1882-1891, [ca. 1910], undated, depict buildings in San Antonio and Bexar County,
outdoor scenes at Grove Lake in Castroville, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass
Railway, and reproductions of images and text from newspapers. Additionally, the
ledger, 1866-1869, documents Charles Graham Carttar’s tenure as liquidator for the
Volunteer Service and General Assurance Association in England, and the
certificates, 1862, 1893, 1911, concern Charles Graham Carttar and his work with the
Texas British Association.
