Scope and Contents

The Jack Campbell Papers, 1860-1861, consists of five letters to Campbell, who possibly lived in Fountain Creek, Tennessee, from two correspondents, Thomas B. Hockaday and G.B. Lipscomb. The letters contain commentary on the secession of Texas, dissatisfaction with Senator Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, the hanging of an effigy of Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin McCulloch’s activities invading Union territory north of Texas. Lipscomb discusses the state of Confederate Army from his perspective as 2nd Lieutenant in Company D of the 7th Texas Infantry. In addition, they mention the Masonic Order in Texas and issues pertaining to farming.
