A Guide to the Asa Brigham Papers, 1832-1837
Biographical/Historical NoteAsa Brigham (ca. 1790-1844) moved to Texas with his family in April 1830. He served the precinct of Brazoria as síndico procurador (1830-1831), comisario (1831-1832), member of the board of health (1831), treasurer (1832), and alcalde (1835). Additionally, Brigham ran a ferry and mercantile business and raised sugar, cotton, corn, and cattle. He helped establish the Brazoria Masonic lodge and the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas in 1837. At the Convention of 1836, Brigham represented Brazoria and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. In the Republic of Texas, he served as state auditor under interim president David G. Burnet (1836), as state treasurer under presidents Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar (1836-1842), and as the fourth mayor of Austin (1842-1843). Source: Handbook of Texas Online, s.v.
