Asa Brigham served as state auditor
under interim president David G. Burnet (1836), as state treasurer under presidents
Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar (1836-1842), and as the fourth mayor of Austin
(1842-1843). The Asa Brigham Papers, 1832-1837, consist of four original letters and
a Photostat of a fifth letter from Asa Brigham to his brother and sister, discussing
his life in Austin’s Colony and his reasons for moving to Texas. Additionally,
transcriptions of three of the original letters are included.
Biographical/Historical Note
Asa Brigham (ca. 1790-1844) moved to Texas with his family in April 1830. He served
the precinct of Brazoria as síndico procurador
(1830-1831), comisario (1831-1832), member of the board
of health (1831), treasurer (1832), and alcalde (1835).
Additionally, Brigham ran a ferry and mercantile business and raised sugar, cotton,
corn, and cattle. He helped establish the Brazoria Masonic lodge and the Masonic
Grand Lodge of Texas in 1837. At the Convention of 1836, Brigham represented
Brazoria and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. In the Republic of Texas,
he served as state auditor under interim president David G. Burnet (1836), as state
treasurer under presidents Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar (1836-1842), and as the
fourth mayor of Austin (1842-1843).
