The narrative begins August 5, 1853 and describes the conditions and events of the trip, including weather conditions, encounters with Native Americans and bears, unfavorable weather conditions, camping and hunting, and illnesses. The diary ends on October 22, while the expedition was still in progress and before it had found any mines.
