		  weeklies. They include the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the American
		  West, the South, Latin America and Texas. Also included are portraits, mainly
		  of politicians and military personnel.</abstract>

		<head>Historical Note</head><p>Most of the prints in this collection come
		  from the pages of <emph render="italic">Leslie’s</emph> and
		  <emph render="italic">Harper’s Weekly</emph> magazines. During their heyday
		  these two publications accounted for a large number of the illustrations that
		  were seen by the average American. Both were particularly distinguished in the
		  images that they published during the Civil War. <emph render="italic">Harper’s
		  Weekly</emph> was published from 1857 to 1916. <emph render="italic">Leslie’s
		  Weekly</emph> dated from 1852-1922. Graham R. Hodges was a pastor from New York
		  who collected these prints over a number of years and then donated them to the
		  Briscoe Center for American History.</p>

		<head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Subjects for the lithographs and
		  engravings in this collection include the Civil War, the Spanish American War,
		  the American West, the South, Latin America and Texas. Also included are
		  portraits, mainly of politicians and military personnel, and images of various
		  entertainments and fashions representative of popular culture in the United
		  States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.</p>
