			<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Ruth Harwood was born on December 2, 1889, in Dallas, Texas, to Ripley Barksdale and
Lucy Keller Harwood. She attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1909 to
1913, where she helped edit the Daily Texan, participated in the Sidney Lanier
Society (SLS), and served as president of the SLS in 1913. After receiving her
bachelor’s degree in 1913, she taught Spanish and Latin at Miss Hockaday’s School in
Dallas (1914-1918); a school in Nevers, France (1918-1919); and finally Waxahachie
High School in Waxahachie, Texas (1920-1921). On June 22, 1920, Harwood married
Clarence Sheldon Rydell of Marbledale, Connecticut. They had four children: Lucy
(Mrs. R. W. Webster), Edith (Mrs. C. D. Roberts), Ruth May, and C. S. Rydell, Jr.
Harwood died on March 29, 1978, in Dallas.</p>

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>The Ruth Harwood Papers, 1910-1913, consist of coursework, printed materials,
publications, and photographs, which document Harwood’s academic and social life at
the University of Texas at Austin. Harwood’s coursework, composed of notebooks,
notes, essays, and tests, and the printed materials, such as invitations, programs,
yearbooks, handbills, and advertisements, illustrate her involvement in educational,
social, and extracurricular activities while a student. Numerous photographs depict
the UT campus, student life, a parade in downtown Austin, Lake Austin, and a train
station. Additionally, the publications include Sidney Lanier Society yearbooks,
assorted newspapers, and issues of the <emph render="italic">Daily Texan</emph>,
					<emph render="italic">Alcalde</emph>, <emph render="italic">The University of
