			<head>Biographical Sketch</head>
			<p>William J. Tucker, soldier, newspaper editor, author, and conservationist, was born
				in Longview, Texas. In 1929 he became the first Executive Secretary of the Texas
				Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission, the state’s effort to regulate hunting and
				fishing and manage wildlife resources responsibly. From 1931 to 1932 Tucker served
				as the president of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, a quasi-official
				group of public agencies charged with the protection and management of North
				America’s fish and wildlife resources. Additionally, he edited the Taylor, Texas,
					<emph render="italic">Daily Press</emph> newspaper and served as a Corporal in
				the Army Air Force during World War II.</p>

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
			<p>The William J. Tucker Papers, 1905-1946, contain letters, literary productions,
				diaries, military records, and an obituary. The records pertain to Tucker’s work
				with the Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission and his various writings, including
				a play entitled <emph render="doublequote">Mammons Hidden Shame</emph> and a World War I story called <emph render="doublequote">They Didn’t
				Have His Number.</emph> Additionally, the collection contains Tucker’s WWI diaries of the
				voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to France, his battle accounts from WWI in France,
				and other writings by Tucker. The papers also include a narrative by I. D. Affleck
				entitled <emph render="doublequote">Defense of the Alamo,</emph> Tucker’s World War II Army Air Force records,
				magazine and newspaper clippings, and an obituary for George Tucker by his son H. H.
				Tucker. Finally, the collection contains correspondence, including letters between
				Tucker and John Marvin Hunter, author, editor, and publisher.</p>
