Biographical Sketch

The Tarkington family founded the Tarkington Cotton Company in Cuero, Texas, in the mid 20th century. Shelley Grant Tarkington (1868-1939) married Lelia Lay (1869-1941) in 1890 and they had seven children, six of whom survived to adulthood. Their children were Jane Lay (1891-1945), Georgia Ellen (1893-1985), Shelly Grant (1895-1962), Friench Simpson (1898-1954), Powis Franklin (1900-1977), Lelia (1905-1978), and Leland Henry (1905-1906).

Scope and Contents

The Tarkington Cotton Company Records, 1949-1967, consist of the day-to-day business records of the company, including receipts, vouchers, invoices, bills, weight records, sales and purchase records, memos, correspondence, code materials, and regulations. The records pertain to buying, selling, and shipping cotton. Additionally, they contain photographs of Shelley Grant Tarkington, Sr., Shelly Grant Tarkington, Jr., Powis F. Tarkington, and the H. K. Williams School.
