					>Post</emph> was a newspaper, established in February 1880 by Gail Borden
				Johnson and absorbed into the Houston <emph render="italic"
					>Chronicle</emph> in 1995. The <emph render="italic"
					>Chronicle</emph>, with bureaus in Washington, D.C., and Austin, is a part of
				the Hearst Corporation. The collection includes newspaper clippings, business files,
				press releases, and campaign finance records. </abstract>

			<head>Historical Sketch</head>
			<p>The Houston <emph render="italic">Post</emph> was a newspaper, established in
				February 1880 by Gail Borden Johnson and absorbed into the Houston <emph
					render="italic">Chronicle</emph> in 1995. The <emph render="italic"
					>Chronicle</emph>, with bureaus in Washington, D.C., and Austin, is a part of
				the Hearst Corporation.</p>
			<p>In 1881, Johnson combined the <emph render="italic">Post</emph> with the Houston
					<emph render="italic">Telegraph</emph>. Three years later it was sold to William
				R. Baker and other Houston citizens, but the investment could not save the paper
				from going under. In April 1885, the longest-running and most recent incarnation of
				the <emph render="italic">Post</emph> was established via the combination of the
				Houston <emph render="italic">Morning Chronicle</emph> and the Houston <emph
					render="italic">Evening Journal</emph>. The Houston <emph render="italic"
					>Dispatch</emph> was also merged into the <emph render="italic">Post</emph>, in
				1924. </p>
			<p>In the 1920s the <emph render="italic">Post</emph> owned Houston radio station KPRC,
				and by the 1950s had acquired the KPRC television station as well. The company went
				on to purchase the News Publishing Company in 1963, which resulted in the ownership
				of the Galveston <emph render="italic">News</emph>, the Galveston <emph
					render="italic">Tribune</emph>, and the Texas City <emph render="italic"
					>Sun</emph>. Throughout its history there has been a number of well-known Texas
				citizens working for the <emph render="italic">Post</emph>, including Henry F.
				MacGregor, both William P. Hobby, Sr. and Jr., and William H. Gardner. </p>

				comprise the Houston <emph render="italic">Post</emph>, Washington D.C. Bureau, Collection, 1963-1995. Included
				in the collection are Washington Bureau Chief (1984-1995) Kathy Kiely’s collected
				files, pertaining to Texans in Washington, the Bush family, George Wallace, column
				ideas, sports, military issues, and politics. The clippings, organized into Subject
				Files, Biographical Files, and “Texans in Washington,” reflect various people,
				topics, and issues addressed by the <emph render="italic">Post</emph>, including George and Barbara Bush, Barbara
				Jordan, Lady Bird Johnson, John B. Connally, Walter Mondale, Tom DeLay, nuclear
				arms, Afghanistan, and Houston Conventions. </p>
