Biographical Note

Frank Oscar Hanke (1864-1958) was born to Franz (Frank) Hanke (1823-1908) and his
wife Therese, German immigrants who came to Texas near the end of the Civil War.
Like his father and grandfather, F. O. Hanke (as he came to sign his name) worked in
a wide range of areas, including farming, ranching and cattle driving. His primary
 profession was carpentry.

Scope and Contents

Personal narratives and genealogical material comprise the Frank Oscar Hanke Papers,
[ca. 1850]-1907, documenting the history of Bastrop County and the Hanke family. The
narratives concern the conditions and activities of Bastrop County, Texas, both
before and after the Civil War, and also describe the journey and day-to-day life of
Franz Henke and his wife following their move to Texas from Germany. The collection
also includes the Hanke family genealogy.
