Biographical Note

Attorney Nathaniel Hart Davis (1815-1893) grew up in Alabama, before attending
Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. After moving to Texas, he joined the
Somervell Expedition (1847) under Col. Joseph L. Bennett. In 1851, Davis married
Sarah Elizabeth White, with whom he had seven children and several grandchildren,
including Nat Hart Davis and Margaret Davis Cameron. He then served as a Montgomery
County commissioner, chief justice, and judge of the Thirteenth Judicial District
(1867-1870). With his brother James R. Davis, he also partnered in a private
practice law firm.
