A Guide to the Conference for Education in Texas Records, 1907-1915
The Conference for Education in Texas was established around 1907 by a number of educators for the purpose of improving and developing the state’s public school system at all levels. To this end, the organization acted to promote favorable legislation, provided lecturers on various educational topics, issued literature concerning educational methodology or pertinent legislation and tax proposals, and articulated the common concerns of interested individuals, educational agencies and organizations, schools, and institutions. Funding for the Conference was based on a subscription campaign to secure funds or pledges from teachers, school superintendents, education-related businesses, and other sympathetic individuals and groups. The position of general agent was generally responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Conference for Education in Texas and served the officers and executive board of the Conference. This position was consecutively held by W. S. Sutton, A. N. McCallum, F. M. Bralley, C. E. Evans, R. Lee Clark, B. E. Satterfield, and T. R. Sampson, and the two presidents of the organization were Clarence Ousley and Pat Neff.
