A Guide to the John Thomas Brackenridge Papers, 1840-1906
Biographical SketchJohn Thomas Brackenridge (1828-1906), a graduate of Indiana State University and Bloomington Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1851. He worked as a lawyer and merchant in Boonville, Indiana, 1851-1854, before moving to Texana, Texas where he was also a merchant, 1854-1861. Brackenridge joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and served as both a captain of cavalry and a major. After the Civil War, in 1866 Brackenridge worked as a cashier at the San Antonio National Bank and by 1877 became president of the First National Bank of Austin. He died in 1906. Furthermore, the papers relate to Brackenridge’s political activities and personal affairs. The papers also include materials of family members, such as a day book and a ledger belonging to both John Thomas and John Adams Brackenridge.
