			<head>Biographical Sketch</head>
			<p>John Thomas Brackenridge (1828-1906), a graduate of Indiana State University and
				Bloomington Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1851. He worked as a lawyer and
				merchant in Boonville, Indiana, 1851-1854, before moving to Texana, Texas where he
				was also a merchant, 1854-1861. Brackenridge joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and
				served as both a captain of cavalry and a major. After the Civil War, in 1866
				Brackenridge worked as a cashier at the San Antonio National Bank and by 1877 became
				president of the First National Bank of Austin. He died in 1906.</p>

			<p>The John Thomas Brackenridge Papers, 1840-1906 include receipts, leases, deeds, bills
				of sale, powers of attorney, inventories, speeches, a diary, correspondence, account
				books, abstracts of titles, legal papers, and newspaper clippings. The papers
				concern Brackenridge’s career as a lawyer and merchant in Boonville, Indiana, as a
				merchant in Texana, as an officer in the Confederate Army, as a cashier at the San
				Antonio National Bank, as president of the First National Bank of Austin, and as a
				landowner in Texas. Furthermore, the papers relate to Brackenridge’s political
				activities and personal affairs. The papers also include materials of family
				members, such as a day book and a ledger belonging to both John Thomas and John
				Adams Brackenridge.</p>
