			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>John A. Templeton (1844-1931) was a Confederate soldier in Company I of the 10th Texas Cavalry. He was captured at Chickamauga, Georgia, in late September 1863 and sent to the Zollicoffer barracks in Nashville, Tennessee. He was then transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois, in October 1863 and later released on May 4, 1865. He owned extensive land holdings in Jacksonville, Texas, and surrounding areas. He was the first city secretary and one of the first aldermen of the newly incorporated town.</p>

			<head>Scope and Contents</head>
			<p>The John A. Templeton Papers, 1861-1863, 1930, contain letters, military and legal
				documents, and newspapers articles. The papers relate to Civil War camp life, reports of battle and skirmish action,
				Templeton’s capture at the Battle of Chickamauga (1863), imprisonment at Fort
				Dougles, Illinois, his prisoner parole and oath of allegiance to the Union, registration
				as an elector in Cherokee County, and also contain a copy of S. M. Templeton’s
				<emph render="doublequote">Early Cumberland Presbyterian History in Texas</emph> generated from the original
				negative Photostatic copy.</p>
