				Thomas Green organized the Texas Land Company and moved to Texas in 1836 but

				commissioned brigadier general, he returned to the United States to raise
				volunteers, money, and ammunition for the Texas cause.</abstract>

			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Thomas Jefferson Green (1802-1863), soldier, legislator, and planter, attended the
				United States Military Academy at West Point, and after was elected to the General
				Assembly in North Carolina in 1823. Soon afterward he went to Florida, became a
				planter, and served as a representative in the Florida legislature. He married Sarah
				Wharton in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 8, 1830; they had one son, Wharton
				Jackson Green. Sarah died in 1835. </p>
			<p>Thomas Green organized the Texas Land Company and moved to Texas in 1836 but
				abandoned the colonization project to serve in the Texas army. After being
				commissioned brigadier general, he returned to the United States to raise
				volunteers, money, and ammunition for the Texas cause. Beginning on October 3, 1836,
				Green represented Bexar County in the Texas House of Representatives.</p>

				Green's public career in Texas; his business affairs in Florida; raising of troops
				and funds in the United States; and letters accepting commissions in the Republic of
				Texas Army. Also included is a green letter, dated Republic of Texas, County of
				Brazoria, June 23, 1838, as <emph render="doublequote">[Late?] Brig Genl Texas
					Army,</emph> certifying military service of Oliver Hale in 1836.</p>
