A Guide to the Charles Burmeister Papers, 1876-1877
Charles Burmeister (1856-1891) was born in Wisconsin of German parents. He was sent from Wisconsin to Texas to investigate living conditions and opportunities for German immigrants.
Stereo views are of Dallas and Houston, primarily commercial buildings. One of the Dallas views portrays the lynching of a black man named Wesly Jones. Manuscript material includes letters and postcards containing Burmeister’s views of the climate and business opportunities in Texas. Most of the letters are in German with synopses in English.
