A Guide to the Richard E. Cochrane Papers, 1838-1859
Biographical SketchRichard E. Cochrane (1818-1846) was born in Pennsylvania. He was a soldier and a lieutenant in the United States Army and fought in the Mexican-American War. During the Mexican-American War, Cochrane was killed at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma on May 9, 1846. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe Richard E. Cochrane Papers, 1838-1859, concern the life and career of Cochrane and include letters, legal documents, a map of the battlefield at Resaca de la Palma, and a scrapbook. The scrapbook primarily contains newspaper clippings, mementos, and poems concerning Lieutenant Cochran’s death, as well as family history. The letters specifically relate to the commission of Cochrane as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Infantry, the living conditions in the army, travel, and Cochrane's death.
