			<head>Biographical Sketch</head>
			<p>Richard E. Cochrane (1818-1846) was born in Pennsylvania. He was a soldier and a
				lieutenant in the United States Army and fought in the Mexican-American War. During
				the Mexican-American War, Cochrane was killed at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma on
				May 9, 1846.</p>

			<p>The Richard E. Cochrane Papers, 1838-1859, concern the life and career of Cochrane
				and include letters, legal documents, a map of the battlefield at Resaca de la
				Palma, and a scrapbook. The scrapbook primarily contains newspaper clippings,
				mementos, and poems concerning Lieutenant Cochran’s death, as well as family
				history. The letters specifically relate to the commission of Cochrane as a 2nd
				Lieutenant in the 4th Infantry, the living conditions in the army, travel, and
				Cochrane's death.</p>
