Biographical Sketch

John Hiram McLean (1862-1931) was a lawyer and judge from Llano County, Texas. He was married to Minnie Button. There is a painting of Judge John H. McLean in the courthouse at Llano County.

Scope and Contents

The John Hiram McLean papers include correspondence, letter-press books, tax receipts and estate material, deeds, speeches, calendars, diary, clippings, court cases, land records, account books, Certificates of Incorporation of the Texas Graphite and Asbestos Company, other business papers including bills, invoices, checks, and certificates, and photographs, which document McLean's life and career. The collection is divided into four series: personal, legal and court, land records, and business records. The personal series is comprised of correspondence, a diary, estate material, and calendars. The legal and court records include criminal cases, bills and suits collected, jury lists, and indexes. The land records pertain to lands for lease and sale in Llano County, and include deeds, abstracts, certificates, and other related records. Finally, the business records series of the papers contains certificates, bills, invoices, and a ledger book.

Items of note in the collection include correspondence and business records from as early as the 1880s to 1930, School Board records, 1891-1907, criminal cases, 1890s-1920s, a wrapped ledger of court cases, and land records and deeds for Llano County, 1875-1922.
