Biographical Note

John Creed Moore (1824-1910) was a Confederate general and West Point graduate. Before the Civil War, Moore married Augusta Estell Clark (1832-1907), and the couple eventually had three children. Moore raised and trained the Second Texas Infantry for the Confederate Army. After receiving a citation for gallantry in leading his regiment at the battle of Shiloh, Moore was promoted to brigadier general on May 26, 1862. A dispute between Moore and General William Hardee prompted Moore to seek a transfer from his position in Hardee’s division. President Jefferson Davis denied the request, causing Moore to resign his command of the Provisional Army of the CSA on February 3, 1864. Retaining the rank of lieutenant colonel, Moore was reassigned as director of the Savannah, Georgia, and Selma, Alabama, arsenals. After the war, he returned to Texas to teach mathematics at Coronal Institute (1869-1870) and other schools and served as superintendent of schools at Mexia and East Dallas.

Scope and Contents

The John Creed Moore Papers, 1849, [ca. 1860s], 1900-1910, 1997, document the life and military career of Moore, particularly his service as a General in the Civil War. The collection contains official military documents (1861-1865) concerning Moore’s service in the Confederate Army, including a report by Major General Carter L. Stevenson on the battle of Lookout Mountain, Moore’s commission as Colonel, a pass to New Orleans, and a loyalty oath, as well as correspondence between Moore and his wife from throughout the war. Furthermore, the papers document Moore’s civilian life and legacy, through a speech dedicated to Moore by W. C. Dodson (1900), Moore’s reminiscences of his early life ([ca. 1908]-1910), and photocopies of photographs (undated). Furthermore, the collection includes correspondence and reminiscences by Marc Moore concerning his ancestor’s legacy (1997).
