A Guide to the Juan de Castañeda Report, 1819
Biographical NoteIn 1818, the viceroy of New Spain assigned Juan de Castañeda, commandant at Bahía, to lead 250 men to defend and explore the Texas frontier in the plain of the Brazos River. The regiment had orders to destroy hostile gangs, report on the physical conditions of the terrain, and gather information on missions and towns in the region.
