R. Beal Pumphrey, Jr. was a native of
Taylor, Texas, and the son of a pioneer cattleman. He worked as assistant to
the general manager and president of the San Antonio Union Stockyards from 1937
to his death in 1957. Prior to that time he had worked for the Kansas City
stockyards. Pumphrey was also a founder of the San Antonio Livestock
Exposition.
The images in this collection range from photographs of soldiers and
cowboys to livestock and other scenes of Texas and Missouri. There is a series
on angora goats taken by Alfred Eisenstadt for LIFE magazine and a photo of a
“Texas X” dinner in Pompeo Coppini’s studio in 1932. The oil fields are also
covered, as is the trial of the 24th infantry members for the 1917 Houston race
riot and a barbecue by the “Boys of the Old Trail” at the Menger Hotel in San
Antonio in 1915. An aerial view of Mission San José ca. 1935 includes a
biplane. Kansas City, Mo., is represented by the American Royal Building and a
series of images of cowboys in the city streets in 1921. Subjects also include
the U. S. S. Houston, San Antonio’s “Battle of Flowers,” Will Rogers, the wheat
harvest in Plainview, Texas in 1924, and longhorn cattle.
