A Guide to the Duncan Emrich Collection, 1940-1945
Biographical NoteDuncan Emrich was an English Professor at Columbia from 1939 until 1942 when he joined the U.S. Army. During World War II he achieved the rank of major as the official American historian in the Secretary of the General Staff's office, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force. After the war, in 1945, he was appointed chief of the Archives of the American Folk Song section of the Library of Congress. He held various positions with the state until, in 1969, he returned to teaching and was a Professor of American Folklore at American University until 1977. Emrich died on August 23, 1977. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsPosters, fliers, maps, memos, orders of the day, articles of surrender, and Emrich’s journal compose the Duncan Emrich collection. The collection contains Emrich’s 1944 journal while he was at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), as well as humorous documents composed during the war as jokes. As historian for SHAEFF, Emrich collected Eisenhower’s orders of the day, a portion of a final report, maps of Normandy, copies of the War Times, a copy of the articles of surrender, and a memo concerning the Battle of the Bulge. Furthermore, during Emrich’s time in France from 1944-1945, he collected many Nazi propaganda and underground resistance posters. The collection contains several of the original posters and fliers as well as photo reproductions of the posters, which were later included in a 1945 exhibit.
