Biographical Note
Composer Lawrence Weiner (1932-2009) studied music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and master’s in 1956. In 1972, he received a doctorate of musical arts from the University of Miami. From 1974 until his retirement in 2003, Weiner taught and served as Composer-in-Residence at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, formerly Corpus Christi State University. Having written more than 160 and published over 50 compositions, Weiner received the American Bandmasters Association’s Ostwald Award for his Daedalic Symphony (1967) and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Scope and Contents
The Lawrence Weiner Papers, 1958-1994, consist of sheet music, sound recordings, correspondence, reviews, newspaper clippings, announcements, photographs, biographical material, and programs regarding Weiner’s career. The sheet music, 1958-1994, contains printed, photocopied, and original handwritten copies of his compositions, including published and unpublished works, while the sound recordings contain primarily live performances of his musical scores, including Daedalic Symphony and Chipita Rodriguez. The programs and announcements, 1961-1994, as well as newspaper clippings and reviews, 1972-1993, document the performances of Weiner’s music and their reception by Texan fine arts communities. The biographical material describes Weiner’s background and career as a composer and teacher at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, formerly Corpus Christi State University. Additionally, the photographs depict Weiner and performances of his music.
