Estelle Boughton Sharp was born in Flint
Michigan (1873-1965). She attended Oberlin College before marrying prominent
Texas oilman and inventor Walter Benona Sharp in 1897. The couple had 3
children and lived in Dallas before moving to Houston in 1904. Mrs. Sharp was a
progressive and an active member of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, the
Advisory Board of the Volunteer Prison League, the Federal Food Administration
Executive Committee, the War Work Council, the National League for Women's
Service, and the League of Women Voters. In the 1950's, she helped finance the
Oral History of Texas Oil Pioneers at the University of Texas.
The papers include the correspondence, notes, lists, land papers,
legal papers, resolutions, opinions, receipts, insurance policies, account
papers, invitations, calling cards, clippings, directories, and photographs of
Estelle Boughton Sharp concerning her political and social activities and the
oil industry of Texas. Included are directories of women's organizations and
lists of members, political clippings, and printed material concerning social
welfare, child guidance, the Democratic Party, food rationing, agriculture,
education, The University of Texas and Russian famine relief.
