A Guide to the John James Papers, 1849-1868
Biographical NoteJohn James (1819-1877) was an early land surveyor and developer in Texas, arriving in 1837 from Nova Scotia. His work reestablished the borders of the land grant of San Antonio, platted the town of Castroville, and surveyed numerous properties in unsettled areas, among other activities. James was also involved in the development of Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, and Bandera.
