		<head>Biographical Note</head><p> 
		  <persname>John James</persname> (1819-1877) was an early land surveyor
		  and developer in Texas, arriving in 1837 from 
		  <geogname>Nova Scotia</geogname>. His work reestablished the borders of
		  the land grant of San Antonio, platted the town of 
		  <geogname>Castroville</geogname>, and surveyed numerous properties in
		  unsettled areas, among other activities. James was also involved in the
		  development of Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, and 
		  <geogname>Bandera</geogname>.</p>
