Interviews of prominent
mathematicians in the field of finite simple group theory, conducted and recorded by
Joseph Gallian.
Historical Note
In 1981 and 1982, Dr. Joseph Gallian recorded his interviews with several prominent
figures in the area of finite simple group theory. Interviewees include Jonathan L.
Alperin, Michael Aschbacher, Daniel E. Gorenstein, Robert L. Griess, and Ronald
Solomon. Dr. Gallian also recorded several lectures given by Gorenstein, Solomon,
Bill Kantor, George Glauberman, and Michael O’Nan.

Scope and Contents
Collection consists of oral history interviews recorded on audio cassettes, and the
transcriptions made of the recordings. The collection also contains cassette
recordings of lectures, for which no transcriptions were made.

Forms part of the Archives of American Mathematics.

Access Restrictions
A portion of this collection is stored remotely at Southpark.

Use Restrictions
To listen to the interviews use “use-copy" tape duplicates.

Joseph Gallian retains copyright.

Box 4RM209 is restricted until 2035. Edited versions of these transcriptions are
available. See Inventory.

Robert Greiss's transcript is not available.
