Biographical Note

Margaret Heffernan Borland was born in
Ireland on April 3, 1824. She came to Texas with her family in 1829 and settled
in San Patricio. She was married and widowed three times and had 7 children.
After her last husband (Alexander Borland) died in 1867, she took over his
cattle business in Victoria. She is said to be the only woman to have led a
cattle drive. In 1873, she drove a herd of cattle to Wichita, Kansas. She died
in 1873 in Wichita after the drive and is buried in Victoria, Texas.
