Francis Luther Whitney was a geologist
and University of Texas geology professor. Born in 1878, he received his Ph.D.
from Cornell University in 1928. He was a pioneer in the field of mathematical
methods for solving problems involving geologic structures. An inventor who
built his own darkroom and photographic equipment, Whitney organized and headed
a machine shop at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas during World War I. Whitney was
married to Grace Pellet and they had one daughter, Marian. He died in 1962.
