A Guide to the Herman Toepperwein Collection, 1895-1905
Creator SketchHerman Toepperwein was born in Menard, Texas, in 1907, the son of Emil and Sophie Nauwald Toepperwein. He is a direct descendant of the first German immigrants to the Fredericksburg area. After successful careers as an attorney and author, Toepperwein died in Kerrville, Texas, in 1976. Scope and ContentsTwo photographs by Emil Toepperwein show the town of Menard, Texas, and a Sunday School picnic near Menard at the San Saba River. The remaining two photographs by Noah H. Rose show Fritz Luckenbach's hotel and Emil Toepperwein's store and a view of the 1899 Menard flood. There are extensive annotations by Herman Toepperwein on the verso of the photographs.
