The mission of the Texas Federation of
Music Clubs (TFMC) is to facilitate cooperation between Texas music
organizations in order to develop and maintain high musical standards, to aid
musical education, and to promote American music and artists. The organization
also funds scholarships in music and dance and hosts the annual State Junior
Festival. TFMC belongs to the South Central Region of the National Federation
of Music Clubs.
TFMC was organized on November 12, 1915 in Brownwood, Texas, under the
leadership of Louise Pace, chairwoman of the Music Department of the Texas
Federation of Women’s Clubs. Lucil Manning Lyons became the first president of
TFMC, which originally comprised 22 Texas music clubs. The first annual
convention was held in Waco in May 1916. By 1928, 320 clubs had joined the
federation. TFMC also began publishing its bulletin, Texas Music News, in 1928.
During its first thirty years, the organization flourished, contributing to
national war efforts during the two world wars, funding radio programs and
music education in schools during the Great Depression, supporting music
appreciation campaigns, and sponsoring musical outreach and charitable work.
Following the World War II era, TFMC’s membership and activities decreased
significantly.

organization and activities of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs, 1915-2005,
including executive offices, standing committees, districts, and affiliated
clubs. The scrapbooks contain news clippings, concert programs, and printed
material documenting federation and club activities in Texas. The club
yearbooks contain membership information. Also included is a bound volume of
piano sheet music dating from the 1860s.
