Biographical Note

Dr. Albert Harrison (A.H.) Rippetoe (sometimes spelled Rippeteau or Rippeteaux) was born near Lenoir, SC in 1814. He settled in Brenham, TX (Washington County) sometime during the 1840s. He married Nancy Amazon Graham, born in Lawrence, SC, in 1852. Between 1861-1862 Dr. Rippetoe served as state representative of District 51 in the 9th Texas Legislature. The family purchased land and built a home north of Brenham in 1862. This property came to be known as Rippetoe Hill.

Reinhold (later Reynold) Ernest (R.E.) Luhn was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. At the age of 16 he came to America and settled first in New York. In approximately 1875 he came to Brenham, TX via Kansas (where he worked and trained as a druggist) in order to purchase an available drug store. In 1878 he married Ida Elizabeth Rippetoe, born in 1855 in Brenham, TX. The couple had ten children born between 1879 and 1899; the youngest was George Milton Luhn born in 1899. George Milton Luhn received a law degree from the University of Texas and served in both world wars. He and his wife had two sons, George Milton Luhn, Jr. and Graham Barton Luhn.

Biographical note prepared using genealogy notes and other material found in the collection.

Scope and Contents

Collection contains Luhn, Graham, and Rippetoe family documents. Formats include letters, financial documents (bills of sale, invoices for goods, deeds, business letters and other similar financial records), legal documents (powers of attorney, land leases, contracts, promissory notes), photographs, newspaper clippings, and genealogical documents. Correspondence is between various family members, with the bulk being sent or received by A.H. Rippetoe, and detail financial dealings as well as personal and family events taking place at the time.

In approximately 1938, 1958, and 1968 Reynold Errol (R.E.) Luhn (sixth son of Reynold and Ida Luhn) annotated many of the documents in pencil or ballpoint pen. These notes (written directly on the documents or accompanying a bundle of documents) explain the context of the documents and/or the individuals associated with the documents. The original order has been maintained for this reason. Documents were unfolded and if an envelope exists, it immediately follows the document. The postage stamps were removed prior to receipt by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.
