	 <head>Biographical Note</head><p>Baum married Ellen Chambers, the daughter
		of Dr. Rowland Chambers and Eleanor Miles Chambers, and served as alderman in
		Vicksburg during the early 1870's.</p>

	 <head>Scope and Contents</head><p>Collection documents the personal and
		business affairs of Baum, a Vicksburg, Mississippi businessman, and his family.
		Correspondence includes two letters discussing "scalawags" and "Yankee
		cupidity" during the Reconstruction era; letters from Baum's relatives in
		Huron, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, describing local farming conditions
		(1866-1874); and correspondence from several of Baum's children attending
		out-of-town schools (1874-1878). The financial records document Baum's business
		interests including his fruit enterprise (1871-1874) as well as daily household
		expenditures. Also included are recipes for home medical remedies. Forms part
		of the Natchez Trace Collection.</p>
