Baum married Ellen Chambers, the daughter of Dr. Rowland Chambers and Eleanor Miles Chambers, and served as alderman in Vicksburg during the early 1870's.

Scope and Contents

Collection documents the personal and business affairs of Baum, a Vicksburg, Mississippi businessman, and his family. Correspondence includes two letters discussing "scalawags" and "Yankee cupidity" during the Reconstruction era; letters from Baum's relatives in Huron, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, describing local farming conditions (1866-1874); and correspondence from several of Baum's children attending out-of-town schools (1874-1878). The financial records document Baum's business interests including his fruit enterprise (1871-1874) as well as daily household expenditures. Also included are recipes for home medical remedies. Forms part of the Natchez Trace Collection.
